PRESERVATION OF PLANT ORGANS

Except for fruits and other succulent plant organs, the plant parts collected, e. g., leaves or stems, were: (1) cleaned from soil or trash attached to the plant material; (2) placed between two sheets of filter paper; (3) set in a dry place or over a source of warm air and loaded with, e. g., heavy books; and (4) transferred between fresh sheets of filter paper every day for the first 2-3 days and then every other day until the specimens were dry.

Succulent or fleshy specimens, e. g., mushrooms or fruits were dried whole by placing them on a screen over a source of warm air (ca. 40oC) for a few days, or they were immersed in a solution of 5-12% formaldehyde in water or in 30-50% alcohol with a small amount of glycerin added.
